Write a brief (150-250 word) response to the assigned document(s) that A) Summarize the document in your own words.
(WHAT does it say?)
-To the best of your understanding, explain what the document (not the editor’s introduction!) says. What are its main points or arguments? What topics does it cover? What are its most important or unifying ideas?
B) Explains how or why the document is significant.
(WHY is it important?)
-Does it illustrate or refer to some event or idea or development or perspective that we’ve already discussed or read about elsewhere? Be specific!
-Is the argument itself important? Is the way the argument is made important? Is the mere existence of the document significant? Explain how or why. You are writing these responses to help you engage with the readings. To answer these questions adequately, you must do more than passively look over the words. You need to read the documents carefully and reflect on what you’ve read. Reread passages that are difficult to understand; look up words you don’t know. Only by understanding (or making a serious effort to understand) the reading and thinking about what it means will you be prepared to contribute to the class discussion. Your audience for these responses is primarily me, but they might also be shared with your classmates. Base your response on your understanding of the document itself. You should read the editor’s introduction, but don’t base your summary on it. Do not copy someone else’s response. Do not use a summary of the document you have found online. Even if you try to paraphrase someone else’s work, this would be plagiarism and would be treated as such – you would earn no points for your response, and I would report your academic dishonesty to the Provost. The responses are only worth 5 points each, it’s better not to turn in a response than to risk your college career by cheating.
Upload your responses through Canvas as one combined file – that is, include all your responses in one (word or page or pdf) document. You may choose to write out or print out your responses and turn them in at the beginning of class – if you choose this option, you might want to take a picture of the assignment as a backup, in case the paper is mislaid.

Edict of Nantes (pp. 225-226)
A. In the Edict of Nantes, Henry IV proclaimed the restoration of Catholicism to all parts of France but observed toleration for Protestantism within specific limits. Protestants could continue to worship privately where the religion already existed without fear of discrimination in the law or education. But, he forbade the spread of Protestantism or its worship in or near Paris, and required Protestants to follow Catholic laws of marriage.
B. The Edict was significant because:
…it established religious toleration within France, allowing Protestants to worship while reassuring French Catholics of the dominance of their religion.
(and/or)
…it linked Henry IV’s power to God’s, offering a religious justification for the king’s rule.
