Write a 2-3 page comparative analysis of any TWO of the following characters listed with ONE of the accompanying quotes:
“It is a wise father that knows his own child” – Merchant of Venice, William Shakespeare: Victor Frankenstein, Willy Loman, Frank Strang
“Every father should remember one day his son will follow his example, not his advice”: The Creature, BIff Loman, Alan Strang
Review the “Guidelines for Writing a Literary Critical Analysis” document (found under the Course Materials)
Your Reader Response needs to be thesis-driven (i.e. interpretation) based upon how the characters relate to the quote. “Victor Frankenstein and Willy are both fathers” is not a good thesis. Neither is “Biff Loman and Alan Strang are bad sons.” The former is not debatable, and the latter is too vague. Your paper should be presenting the reader wiith a specific interpretation, based upon your analysis of the two characters in one in the context of the accompanying quote. And providing the reader with textual evidence from the relevant texts to support it. So for example, if you choose Willy and Frank, you would have to give an intepretation of how both characters know their child(ren).. In the case of Frankenstein, you are looking at Victor and the Creature’s relationship as a father/son relationship.
Note: You will more than likely mention the sons in the context of the fathers or vice versa. Overlap is expected. The difference would be that your interpretation would be the primary focus. So an interpretation focusing on the fathers may include the sons, but the essay would not be about the sons.
Here are some things the reader does not need to know, and therefore, should not be included in your essay:
Dictionary definitions (Ex: “According to Webster’s Dictionary, a father is defined as…”)
Evaluative statements (Ex: “Arthur Miller does a wonderful job of describing…”; “Personally, I think the novel is boring…”)
Overall summaries (Ex: “Frankenstein is about…”)
Historical contexts (Ex: “Frankenstein is a novel written in 1818 by Mary Shelley”)
Disclaimers (Ex: “Equus is very confusing and hard to follow”)
Alterative analyses (Ex: “There are so many ways in which Frank Strang and Willy Loman are similar…”
The Assignment Prompt (Ex: “The assignment asks for us to examine two of the following three characters… I chose _________ and ___________”)
Inclusion of any of these elements will detract from the quality of your analysis, and will be graded accordingly.
