Write a rhetorical analysis of Henry David Thoreau’s “Civil Disobedience.” Please, use the following format:
Introduction: Introduce the reading, the author’s background, the historical relevance of the passage, and a reference to the intended audience as it is also important. As you do this, you would paraphrase the author’s main idea of the work and why it is still relevant today. You would also identify the kinds of rhetoric the author uses well and the kinds of rhetoric he misuses–as long as it is rhetoric that you plan to discuss in your paper. Finally, you would need to state whether, overall, the work is successful based on the rhetoric, not whether you agree or disagree with the main idea or other ideas.
Body: Assess Thoreau’s rhetoric. In the body of your essay, you will need to focus on one aspect of the author’s rhetoric at a time. For example, you might have a section about how the author’s ethos is sound or not. For example, why is it trustworthy or not? Does the author present information fairly and accurately? Are important and complicated or ambiguous terms clearly defined? (If not, this might lead a reader to mistrust the ideas because the reader might not understand the unfamiliar terms.) You might also discuss sound logic for some of the work and fallacies for other portions. Where is the author being logical? How does it help? Where is the author being illogical? How does it do harm to the work? It is important to focus on one aspect of rhetoric in a section. Save the other aspects of rhetoric for other sections. Don’t discuss too many rhetorical concepts at once. If you include too much in one section, it becomes confusing and difficult for your reader to follow.
Conclusion: State your conclusions about the overall validity of the piece–your assessment of the author’s success at achieving his or her aims. Remind the reader of the areas of weakness and strength of the passage.
Do not use any supplemental sources. The only sources you may use are Thoreau’s “Civil Disobedience” and your personal experience and knowledge. If you use additional sources for this essay, you will lose an automatic 25%.
