In partial fulfillment of the course learning objectives, you will submit one major research essay assignment. This writing project will examine the “Corrupt Bargain” of 1824 between John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. Your assignment will be to show how and why this election is known by this name, and how it impacted the spread of democracy in America.
To support this argument, you will write a 3-5 page research essay (format specifics below) in which you assert (in general terms) a thesis (argument), support it with relevant factual information (body paragraph), and examine its significance (conclusion). This is a formal project requiring primary and secondary research, annotated with proper citations (see Format Requirements below).
Background
Few elections in US history are controversial as the “corrupt bargain” of 1824. In the 1824 presidential election, Andrew Jackson did not publicly advocate (campaign) for his own election, in keeping with the tradition of the day. Jackson, however, did make it clear that he was determined to cleanse government of corruption and return it to its earlier values. Other candidates included Secretary of State John Quincy Adams, Speaker of the House Henry Clay of Kentucky, and William Crawford of Georgia.
Americans went to the polls in the fall of 1824. Though Jackson won the popular vote, he did not win enough Electoral College votes to be elected. Thus, he won a plurality, but not a majority. The decision then fell to the House of Representatives, which met on February 9, 1825. Under the Twelfth Amendment to the Constitution, the winner among the the top three finishers; Adams, Jackson, and William Crawford of Georgia, was decided by the House of Representatives, who met on February 9, 1825. They elected John Quincy Adams; however, House Speaker Henry Clay was Adams’ chief supporter because Adams called for an ‘American System,’ to be part of the new economy. Jackson graciously accepted defeat until rumors began to swirl that Clay and Adams had struck a deal to ensure Adams’ election. When Adams named Henry Clay as his Secretary of State, it confirmed Jackson’s suspicions that the two men had reached a “corrupt bargain” and deprived the American people of their popular choice for president.
Questions to Consider as you Plan/Write your Essay
Your primary task is to examine the election “corrupt bargain” of 1824 through the lens of personal and social responsibility. In this context, Social Responsibility means that individuals in and outside of government have a duty to act in the best interests of their society as a whole. Consequently, you should examine the actions of Andrew Jackson, John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, and even the House of Representatives to determine if they were acting within the context of personal and social responsibility, or, if their actions were furthering the cause of democracy. Discuss why or why not.
– Your essay should also include tthe impact of the 1824 corrupt bargain on the ensuing 1828 election and its consequential outcome.

Essay Format
After you have carefully read the document, conducted your research, and contextualized the content with the textbook, you will write a 3-5 page Essay addressing the above “questions to consider.”
Format of Essay:
Introduction:
This must include an introductory paragraph that describes the argument you intend to make in your paper. This introduction MUST include a thesis statement, which clearly outlines what you intend to prove/argue in the body of your writing. Your introduction MUST summarize the main points of evidence you will use in your Essay’s body paragraphs. Your paper’s direction and flow are primarily driven by the quality of the thesis and outline that you present in your introduction; so, be sure that you have a clear and focused thesis that includes your list of main points of evidence or support.
Body Paragraphs
Write supporting paragraphs that support the argument presented in your thesis. These supporting paragraphs MUST use your primary and secondary sources to support your argument. You may as well use the textbook. There is no maximum to the number of supporting paragraphs that you can use to make your argument; however, be sure to keep your paper focused on your argument and do not fill it with irrelevant material.
Conclusion
Write a conclusion (can be more than one paragraph) that re-enforces your argument and sums up the overall Essay. The last paragraph is a good place to include why it is significant for students to know this history.
