You will create two sets of two tables for this assignment. The first set of tables must be created based on the APA standard. The second set of tables does not require APA formatting standards. Instead, your design choices should be customized to a specific audience’s information needs. It should be designed to optimize the presentation of key insights using table design best practices. Then, you will compare the tables regarding the appropriateness of communicating key insights.
For this assignment, you will need a dataset. You can use the “International Division Sales Revenue” Excel dataset that is available in Lesson 4 resources or find your own dataset. If using a personal dataset, please make sure that it is a de-identified dataset. You can also create a mock dataset. If you choose to create or find your own dataset, please keep in mind that the tables must include time-series data (such as years, months, quarters), a categorical data/variable (such as sales divisions, companies, income brackets, etc.), and a quantitative variable (such as sales revenue, headcount, etc.). If you don’t want to use the provided dataset (International Division sales Revenue) and instead use a different dataset, please seek approval from your instructor.
Part I. APA-formatted Tables
The first set of tables must be completed according to the APA standards using the Technical Communication Lesson 4 Assignment dataset. The “International Division Sales Revenue” dataset is included in your course resources. If you choose to use a different dataset, please seek approval from your instructor.
Table 1 (APA). Create a complete table including all APA standards using the International Division Sales Revenue dataset (or a dataset of your choice). The table should include total sales revenue for the following international sales divisions by year, with the rows and columns as indicated:
Rows: International Sales Divisions
Australia
South America
Africa
Asia
North America
Columns: Years
2000
2005
2010
2015
2020
If you are using your own dataset, make sure that your categorical variable is represented in rows and your time series variable is represented in columns.
Table 2 (APA). Create a complete table including all APA standards using the “International Division Sales Revenue” dataset. The table should include the sales revenue for the following international sales divisions by year, with the rows and columns as indicated:
Rows: Years
2000 – 2020 (21 total rows)
Columns: International Sales Divisions
Australia
South America
Africa
Asia
North America
If you are using your own dataset, make sure that your categorical variable in represented in columns and your time series variable is represented in rows.
Part II. Customized Tables
The second set of tables (Table 3 and 4) are intended to be customized to highlight key insights gleaned from the APA-formatted tables in Part I. Some argue that the use of strict APA formatting guidelines results in tables that are neither audience-tailored nor offer the best way of highlighting key insights and achieving intended communication goals. Instead of following APA standards, the customized tables should be completed based on the table design best practices as indicated in your Lesson 4 resources. This is your chance to use design strategies to highlight what is interesting about the tables that you created in Part I through customization!
Table 3 (custom). Customize Table 1 from Part I of this assignment. Instead of using APA format, you are encouraged to use best practices in table design to customize the table to highlight key insights that would be of interest to an intended audience. The columns and rows should be identical to the APA-formatted Table 1.
Table 4 (custom). Customize Table 2 from Part I of this assignment. Instead of using APA format, you are again encouraged to use best practices in table design to customize the table to highlight key insights that would be of interest to an intended audience. The columns and rows should be identical to the APA-formatted Table 2.
Part 3. Critique Your Tables
Critique tables 1 through 4. In your critique, please answer the following questions:
Comparing Table 1 with Table 2 indicate when it would be more appropriate to condense years rather than displaying all years in the trend? What are the pros and cons of how the information is presented in the table?
Comparing Table 1 with Table 3, indicate the circumstances where Table 1 would be a more effective communication tool than Table 3? When would Table 3 be more effective than Table 1?
In summary, under what circumstances would the APA-formatted tables be the most appropriate means of communication? Under what circumstances would the custom tables be the most appropriate means for communication?
Length: 5 pages (1 page for each table and 1 page for written summary). Tables should include relevant notes and citations. The last summary page should include a critique of tables 1 through 4
