You will investigate intrapopulation variation using a population readily available in your local area. The idea is that the individuals within the population will vary in some measurable way (ex. weight, length, number of spots, etc.). Some ideas for population choices are: Recommended: acorns located in a specific area (i.e. beneath a single tree)
Pinecones located in a specific area (i.e. beneath a single tree) are another option, though it may be difficult to obtain a large number of them if they are large pinecones. If no suitable population can be identified, you may use black oil sunflower seeds, commonly sold as bird seed. Identify the population that will be used for your study. Determine what characteristic is variable (i.e. is different among the selected individuals) and will be used for your measurements. Suggestions are length (measured with a ruler) or weight (measured on a digital kitchen scale). The steps for recording this variation are: Gather 100 individuals from this population and begin to make your measurements. Construct a data table with your measurements in the left margin ranging from your smallest value to your largest value. For each individual, you will record the measurement as a tally mark next to the appropriate value.
Create a data table that contains your information. Sort the data into some kind of size classes—ranges of sizes or small/medium/large—and then create a histogram
Use GoogleSheets or Excel to generate a histogram of the collected data.
A quick tutorial for creating a histogram in excel can be found here: Creating a Histogram in Excel (Links to an external site.)
Briefly summarize the variation observed in the population. Be sure to include the type of selection that is being exhibited (i.e. stabilizing, diversifying, or directional).
Week 1 Assignment 3 – Writing the Methods Section of a Research Paper
In this brief writing assignment, you will focus on how to properly write the methods section of a research paper. This should be based on your Observing Intrapopulation Variation Lab. Writing Scientific Manuscripts will serve as an excellent source for all of your science writing needs. It is recommended that you save the document on your computer for use in this lab and future science courses. For this specific assignment, the sections that cover writing the methods section will be particularly useful.
Your submission should be no more than one page in length. Keep in mind that the purpose of this section of the paper would be for someone else to be able to replicate your work. Be sure to include any steps necessary to complete the experiment. This should not be a prepared list of steps. Instead, it should summarize the steps in paragraph form. Your methods should be detailed enough that someone could conduct your experiment from these instructions.
Please post your work to the board below. You are not required to respond to the work of your classmates in this discussion space; we are only using it to collect work so that you have an opportunity to see the work of your peers.
